Bible Conference offers answers to
marital, emotional issues

BOISE – Did you know that the answers to marital and emotional problems are found in the writings of one book?  You guessed it – the Bible.

That’s what Dr. Ed Bulkley says and he is backing up his words with a three-day workshop, Thursday-Saturday, September 12-14, 2002, at Crossroads Christian Church (501 N. Curtis Road, Boise) entitled, "Biblical Solutions for Marital and Emotional Problems."

On the 12th and 13th, the workshop runs from 6-9 p.m. The Saturday morning workshop is 8-11 a.m. This training will prove valuable for married couples, single adults, Pastors, professional counselors, women's ministry leaders, mature teens and others. There is no cost for the three-day conference, although an offering will be taken to help offset costs.

"The Bible is a relevant source to resolve our relational issues," said Dr. Bob Compton, who is chairman of Foundations in Genesis of Idaho. "Its teachings on relationships apply as much today as they did at the time the Bible was written."

"God created us to have relationships and His word shows us how to have those relationships the way they were originally intended."

Bulkley is the President of the International Association of Biblical Counselors and the senior pastor at L.I.F.E. Fellowship church in Westminster, Colo. He has published several books on the subject of biblical counseling including, "Why Christians Can’t Trust Psychology," "Only God Can Heal the Wounded Heart" and "How Big is Your God?"

In addition to Dr. Bulkley, other speakers include Pastor Alden Laird and his wife Sue Laird, Bulkley’s wife Marlowe.  All are certified biblical counselors and frequent speakers on the subject and Alden Laird is the co-host of "Return to the Word," a national radio program (heard in the Treasure Valley on KBGN 1060 AM).

"In more than 30 years of counseling, we have seen, that God’s word is the most effective means of permanently transforming peoples lives," said Bulkley.

The Idaho Licensing Bureau has approved the workshops for six credits for licensed counselors, provided they attend each session. When you register, please indicate whether you are interested in receiving the six continuing education credits.

Many people have been signing up for the upcoming Biblical Counseling Workshop entitled "LOVE IN ACTION": Biblical Solutions for Marital and Emotional Problems.  However, a number of people have asked the question: "How will the information we receive from Dr. Bulkley differ from the counseling precepts being practiced in most counseling centers today?" Below is an article taken from Dr. Bulkley's website that will help to answer that question.

"Counseling God's Way" is more than a catchy phrase. It's a commitment to take the Scriptures seriously and to help God's people apply His truth to their personal lives in practical ways.

Counseling God's Way is different from psychological and some practices of Christian counseling. Genuine Biblical counseling goes doesn't sprinkle a few Bible verses here and there to make the counseling seem Bible-centered. In contrast,Biblical counseling seeks to carefully discover those areas where a Christian may be disobeying the principles and commands of Scripture and help that person learn how to lovingly submit to God's will.

Effective Biblical counselors:
Do not automatically diagnose a counselee's problems as flagrant and willful rebellion and prescribe a couple of Bible verses with the promise of quick healing.
Do not automatically assume that every problem is biologically caused, requiring years of intensive psychotherapy and psychotropic drugs.

While Biblical counselors recognize that many problems of thinking and behavior are physically caused, they also recognize that many physical symptoms are generated by wrong patterns of thinking and action.

Biblical counselors take Colossians 1:28 seriously, presenting Christ without shame, lovingly confronting sin, and teaching Biblical principles in order to produce maturity in the life of the counselee.

It is our observation that psychological counseling is based on "hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ," (Colossians 2:8). That's why Paul warns, "See to it that no one takes you captive" through such empty concepts.

Biblical counselors truly believe that God "has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness," (2 Peter 1:5). If we apply God's principles to our lives and grow in our character qualities, Peter promises "they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive," (vs.8), but if we fail to do so, Peter says we are "nearsighted and blind" forgetting that we have "been cleansed from [our] past sins" (vs.9).

Counseling God's Way is totally different, because it relies on the wisdom of God, not on the false precepts of humanistic philosophies and theories.
