It's Harvest time and it's also FIGI time again!

James Mathew has put a lot of work into preparing an excellent powerpoint presentation on the subject of "The Changing Face of American Law: The Influence of Darwinism and Evolution" Two of James' children will participate in the presentation and add a bit of drama. Kathy Harris and the Children's team have developed some great activities for your children, to include a mock courtroom trial in response to the movie "Inherit the Wind" (about the Scopes Trial).

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
This seminar summarizes an article written by David Barton, founder of "Wallbuilders", in the Regent University Law Review entitled "A Death Struggle Between Two Civilizations". David Barton traces the changing character of U.S. law from the inception of this country until the present time - how the original intents of the Founding Fathers and Framers of our Constitution have been corroded over the last two centuries under the pretext of being current with the latest advancements in human knowledge.

The idea that everything evolves slowly over long periods of time has been in existence for over 26 centuries, starting with Anaximander in 600BC and Aristotle to Leibnitz and Kant in the early 1700`s. Thus discussion of this topic was prevalent while our founding fathers were drawing up the U.S. Constitution. They deliberately introduced words into the Declaration of Independence that clearly stated their belief in a Supreme Creator. Quoting numerous references, David Barton shows that the Founding Fathers intended that American Law be guided by and conform to the rules given to us by our Creator.

In the Scopes trial of 1925, the Tennessee Supreme Court upheld a law that prohibited any teaching in public schools that denied the divine creation of man. The court found that this law neither violated the U.S. constitutional prohibition against the establishment of religion, nor Tennessee State's constitutional requirement "to cherish science". In contrast, the U.S. Supreme Court held, in 1987, that the establishment clause of the Constitution was violated by Louisiana's "Balanced Treatment Act" which required schools to give equal time to the sciences of creation and evolution.

This seminar compares the precepts of natural laws (laws rigorously established by the scientific method and based on transcendent values) with that of relativistic law (laws based on man?s current knowledge and immediate needs), and discusses the consequences of each approach.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
James was born in Madras, India, and came to the United States in 1980 to pursue graduate studies. He obtained a doctorate in Materials Science and Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. After graduation he joined IBM where he worked for several years as an engineer in their East Fishkill, NY, semiconductor development facility. He left IBM in 1993 to work in a similar capacity at Micron Technology, Boise, ID. He is currently an SRAM process integration engineer, working on the next generation SRAM products for Micron.

James' Christian faith did not really blossom until after his move to Boise. He considers the Answers in Genesis Family Seminar, held a few years ago in Boise, to be a turning point in his Faith journey. He used to be "mildly" interested in the creation-evolution debates as a casual onlooker, but this seminar opened his eyes to the inerrancy and sufficiency of God?s Word. For the first time he really understood that there was actually no factual conflict between scientific laws and the Bible. Where there seems to be a conflict, it is mostly because we do not have all the right information. James is grateful for the Foundations In Genesis of Idaho (FIGI) monthly meetings where we can all mutually support and build each other?s faith.

James is married to Annette. He has 3 children - Chris (18), Jon(17), Melissa(15) from a previous marriage. His recreational hobbies include running and table tennis. At the end of October, James and a friend are going trekking high up into the Himalayan Mountains for a few weeks. (We're already looking forward to  the pictures of his trip!)
