ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
The successes of the space program in the last century including the attacks on
England by German V-2 rockets in WWII, the orbiting of the earth by Sputniks 1
and 2 in the fall of 1957, the placing of men in space, and the landing of men
on the moon have made science look very good. These spectacular successes have
given the impression that science really works and that scientists must know
what they are talking about. Some people have even thought that since science
did so well at putting men on the moon that when science says "man is the end
result of millions of years of evolution through the process of natural
selection." that this must be true since science must have proven it to be true.
But there are many different sciences and applications of science. Science works well in areas such as the space program where the classical scientific method can be easily applied. There are other areas of study in which the application of the scientific method is much more difficult and the inconclusive results obtained allow a wide range of conclusions to be drawn. Such an area of study is that of the evolution of life on earth through natural processes.
The presentation will begin by discussing what science is and what the scientific method is. It will continue by discussing how science and the scientific method were applied in the various space programs. The methods used to validate the major scientific theories that were applied to the space programs will be discussed. Some of the inherent difficulties involved in applying the same methods to the study of the evolution of life on earth will be pointed out. The conclusion will be reached that the application of science required to place men on the moon is much more straightforward and simple than the application of science required to prove that life evolved on earth by natural means.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Roy's grandfather settled in the Council Valley in 1888 and in 1895 Roy's father
was born. His father was very talented in mechanics and electricity. He built
one of the first radios as well as the first electric arc welder ever used in
the Council Valley. His father's inventive ingenuity made it possible for the
Gould ranch to have electricity nearly 20 years before Idaho Power brought their
lines into the valley.
In 1940 Roy was born and grew up on the family farm in Council, Idaho. After
graduating from high school, Roy attended the University of Idaho where he
studied Electrical Engineering. Following graduation from the U of I in 1963, he
accepted a job working for the Army as an Electronics Engineer at White Sands
Missile Range in New Mexico. He spent the next 32 years testing various missile
systems both in the lab and by computer simulation. Roy was a lead engineer in
the development of computerized flight simulation for several missile systems.
He applied equations learned in college to describe the operations of various
parts of these computerized simulations of missile flight. He conducted many
validation tests to prove that computer simulation provided the same data as an
actual missile in flight.
During his early years, Roy doubted the existence of God. However, a year after
working at White Sands, he came to the conclusion that God was real. Roy later
determined that since the theory of evolution was weak from a scientific point
of view, the best explanation for origins, the existence of mankind and why we
are here, is the Genesis account of the Creation story.
Roy had worked at White Sands for 32 years when the cold war was won and the
military began to consolidate and downsize. Since this impacted the Army
Research Laboratory where Roy worked, he decided to take early retirement and
move back to Idaho. Roy now lives in Meridian, Idaho with his wife Mary Ann. He
still enjoys doing simulations on his Pentium super computer.
REFRESHMENTS SERVED AFTER THE MEETING AT BOTH LOCATIONS!
