Succor
Creek Oregon Field Adventure
Saturday, May 5, 2007
The Succor Creek area is a tantalizing geologic area. This local is situated just across the Idaho border in Oregon, about 30 miles north of Jordan Valley. Multi-colored volcanic rocks of all types abound along the cliffs of Succor Creek with layered volcanic sediments from Lake Idaho exposed in lower elevations. The emphasis on this Adventure will be excavation of a petrified tree and collecting thunder eggs. Many of the thunder eggs will be hollow with the inside cavity lined with beautiful crystals. Participants will have the opportunity to use a diamond saw to cut some of their thunder eggs.
Families interested in this one-day Adventure will meet in the town of Marsing, Idaho which is located along Highway 55, on the west side of the Snake River. The meeting location is the Marsing Island Park immediately south of Highway 55 after crossing the Snake River Bridge, on the east side of Marsing. We will rendezvous in the large parking lot at 9:00 a.m.
Travel to the Adventure locations will be by vehicle caravan. High clearance SUV’s, pickups, vans, etc. are recommended, we will be on dirt roads part of the time. Two-way walkie-talkies (Family Radio) will be handy for communications. Remember spring can be challenging weather; bring clothing for cool and damp and/or warm and sunny conditions. Lunch and water are always important on a day outing. Also bring geology pick, bars, shovels, gloves, containers for rocks; such as, buckets or canvas bags, camera and binoculars.
