Foundations In Genesis of Idaho
Spring Field Trip
Spring is an ideal time to explore the western Idaho hills in the Sweet/Ola area. This will be a one-day field trip to investigate and study what is known as the Western Idaho Fault System, recent volcanism, Lake Idaho deposits, Post-Flood erosion marks, and much more. We will have the opportunity to collect pieces of obsidian (volcanic glass) that was hot when it was eroded or ejected into a water environment. Here is a question for you – What does water do to hot glass? This landscape has definitely been through some catastrophic happenings of "recent times."
We will meet in the Albertsons Supermarket parking lot located on the north side of Highway 16, in the southeast side of Emmett, at 7:45 am, leaving for the field trip at 8:00 am sharp! Remember…this is a spring field trip; so be prepared for warm, cool, windy, and wet weather. Wear appropriate layered clothes, tennis shoes or hiking boots, rain/sun hat, binoculars, camera, geology pick, a lunch and plenty of drinking water. Small plastic bags are handy to collect rock sample in.
The trip will have four stop locations. Participants will have lunch at the third stop, where we will walk about 50 yards to enjoy "lunch in the rocks." The other trek will be about 1/4 mile on flat ground. This adventure will be completed in the Sweet area about 4:00 pm. All roads can be traversed by passenger cars, however, vans, SUV's and trucks are better.
