FOUNDATIONS IN GENESIS OF IDAHO AND OREGON
SPRING FIELD TRIP, MAY 4, 2002
GRANDVIEW AREA AND LAKE IDAHO
PURPOSE OF FIELD TRIP: The field trip emphasis will be to discuss, study, and
expose the geologic evidences of ancestral Lake Idaho (post Flood) along the
southern border of the Snake River Plain near the towns of Grandview and Bruneau,
Idaho. Several stops will be made along the route. Each participant will have a
chance to perspire as we do some light hiking for up to ½ mile over hilly
terrain. We will also be digging with shovels, moving sand with buckets and
screening for fossils (many fish fossils). Does this sound like fun? A detailed
informational handout will be provided to all participants on the morning of the
trip.
WORD OF CAUTION: Although we are not discouraging children from attending the
field trip, parents need to be aware of certain potential hazards. As long as
people remain in the location where the actual digging and screening is being
done, there should be no problem. However, just a few blocks in either direction
the terrain becomes more hazardous, with unstable rocks, caves and the potential
for scorpions and rattlesnakes. If young children or teenagers want to explore
the area beyond the main dig site, then a parent must remain with them at all
times! Young children must be supervised throughout the entire field trip.
WHERE TO MEET: Participants will meet at one of two locations.
1. ONTARIO, COUNCIL, CAMBRIDGE, CALDWELL, NAMPA: This group of people will
rendezvous in the area of the Walters Ferry Bridge where Highway 45 crosses the
Snake River south of Nampa, at the north side gas station @ 8:30 am. Departure
will be at 9:00 am sharp!
2. BOISE/MERIDIAN: This group of people will meet at 8:30 am at the Boise
Calvary Chapel Church parking lot @ 123 Auto Drive. The church is located on the
south side of Franklin Road, east of the Town Square Mall and west of Cole Road.
Departure will be at 9:00 am sharp!
WHAT TO BRING: Spring of the year can be warm, wet and windy, all at the same
time. Long pants are recommended along with sweater, coat or light wind/rain
shell and sun/rain cap. Must items are daypack, sack lunch, LOTS of water, heavy
duty gloves, shovel, and 3 to 5 gallon plastic buckets. Screens will be provided
for the sifting operation; however, if you do have a screen, bring it along.
Ticks can be common in the Sage Brush in the spring, and rattlesnakes may be
encountered. Other items to bring are comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes,
sunglasses, binoculars, plastic baggies with soft tissue for wrapping fossil
specimens.
